“A handbook of the Security Service” is a publication exposing the operating methods of the communist Security Service (SB – “Służba Bezpieczeństwa”). It depicts, the most frequently discussed contemporary problems, that have to do with the operational work of the security apparatus. The methods and the tools of the SB are also exposed. The author defines and describes the basic categories of personal sources of information (OZI – “osobowe źródła informacji”) used by the operational branches of the SB, which were active in the PRL in the years 1970 – 1989. A major part of the book is dedicated to the secret collaborators (TW – “tajny współpracownik”), where in separate chapters, the author talks about the recruitment methods, the process of collaboration (the connection to the source, its supervision, training and educating and finally control), as well as the process of closing down the contact cooperation. Furthermore, the substantive means of operational work are being portrayed – with the greatest emphasis on operational techniques and outdoor surveillance.

The methods of operational work of the SB are clearly defined and talked over in the book, as well. First of all, the author presents the informational (reconnaissance) methods: analysis, proofing and operational surveillance. Following that, is the description of the manipulating methods such as: inspiration, disinformation, disintegration, and operational interviews. Finally, the encompass methods, which were manipulation, gameplay and operational suss. At the same time the author talks about the way of supervising and documenting the dealings of the SB, such as the cases of operational checkup (SOS – “sprawy operacyjnego sprawdzenia”), cases of operational sussing out (SOR – “sprawy operacyjnego rozpracowania”), object oriented cases (SO – “sprawy obiektowe”) and filing questionnaires (KE – “kwestionariusze ewidencyjne”).

The author also presented the topics lesser known to the researchers – psychological methods of obtaining testimonies from the arrestees, which were used by the investigating branch of the SB. The ending of the book in synthetic form, portrays the change in means, methods and forms of documenting of the operational work of the security apparatus in the period of 1944 – 1990.

To make it easy on the Reader, to move around the professional terminology, the book contains a dictionary of basic terms from the language used by the officers of the security apparatus.
