Excerpts from the Report on "Efforts to Prosecute Nazi War Criminals (01.01.2001 - 31.03.2002)", based on the questionnaire of Simon Wiesenthal Center - wersja graficzna tekstu



1. Number of cases completed in the period from January 1st, 2001 to March 31st, 2002.

On March 14th, 2001 the Departmental Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation in Pozna񠩳sued an indictment to the District Court in Pozna񠡧ainst Henryk Mania for the deed consisting in the co-operation with the German state from December 8th 1941 to April 7th 1943 in the concentration camp in Cheωmno upon Nerem (currently the ω󤟠voivodship) where he, acting together and in the co-operation with other people, took part in genocide on Polish citizens of Jewish nationality, which qualifies as a crime according to Art. 1, Par. 1 of a decree of August 31st 1944 on crimes and punishments for Nazi criminals guilty of murders and tortures inflicted upon civilians and prisoners and for traitors of the Polish Nation (Official Journal of the Republic of Poland, No. 69 of 1946, position 377).
On June 7th, 2001 the District Court in Pozna񠭠delegation in Konin - found the defendant guilty of the crime and sentenced him for 8 years of imprisonment (the sentence: XVI K 3/01).
On February 2nd, 2002, the Court of Appeal in Pozna񠥸amining the appeal of the defendant submitted by his attorney Jarosωaw L., sustained the sentence of the District Court in Pozna񮠔he sentence is legally valid.

2. Number of cases filed or currently in litigation.

So far no other person has been charged with committing a crime and no further indictments have been issued.

3. Number of cases launched in 2001 and before the end of March 2002.

48 investigations have been initiated in the Institute of National Remembrance - Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation in Poland, out of which:

A. Departmental Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation in Biaωystok initiated 5 investigations in the cases of:

  1. so called pogrom of the Jewish people in the third decade of June 1941 in Miastkowo;

  2. murder on July 7th 1941 and in the following years of several hundred Polish citizens of Jewish nationality in Radziwiω󷬠Podlaskie voivodship;

  3. murder of Polish citizens, including the citizens of Jewish nationality, committed in the years 1941-1944 in the prison in ωomωa;

  4. murders committed in the years 1941-1944 by the Gestapo officers from Woωkowysk, in the area of their jurisdiction, on Polish citizens, including the citizens of Jewish nationality;

  5. murders of August 12th, 1943 in Niezbodziczce, the commune of Jaω󷫡, Podlaskie voivodship, committed on 46 Polish citizens, including a 6-member family of a Jewish nationality by unidentified perpetrators.

B. Departmental Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation in Gda񳫠initiated 3 investigations, in the cases of:

  1. crimes committed in the years 1941-1944 by the Nazi police officers and cooperating with them Lithuanian police officers, in the area of the Vilnius voivodship, among others in Oszmiana, Parafian󷬠Probianki, Nowo ωwi꣩any, Gωꢯkie and Ponary near Vilnius, on Polish citizens of Jewish nationality as well as the eradication of the Vilnius ghetto;

  2. kidnapping in 1943 and 1944 by Germans, during the occupation of Poland, from unidentified places in Poland, against the will of their parents and custodians, of an unidentified number of juvenile Polish female citizens of Jewish nationality, imprisoning them in Liszkowo, Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodship, with the aim of their extermination;

  3. shooting down in September 1939 in Tuchola, Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodship, by the German officers of so called Selbschutz, of 46 Polish citizens of the Jewish nationality.

C. Departmental Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation in Krak󷠩nitiated 3 investigations in the cases of:

  1. murdering the Jewish family - the Szlams, by the Nazi occupants in Spring 1941 or Spring 1942 in Podole G󲯷a, Maωopolskie voivodship;

  2. murdering by the Nazi occupants in Spring 1943 or 1944, on an unidentified date, in Dobran󷫡, the county of Borszcz󷬠no fewer than 116 unidentified by names and surnames Polish citizens of Jewish nationality;

  3. burning Polish citizens of Jewish nationality who were the inhabitants of Pi񣺳w in ωwi괯krzyskie voivodship, by German armed forces, in September 1939 in Pi񣺳w.

D. Departmental Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation in Katowice initiated 2 investigations in the cases of:

  1. the collaborator of the Gestapo, who during the Hitler occupation, cooperating with the German state, took part in the murder of the inhabitants of the village Zawiercie, including the Polish citizens of Jewish nationality;

  2. murdering approximately 40 Polish citizens of Jewish and Polish nationality, by unidentified officers representing the German state, on September 9th 1939 in Bꤺin.

E. Departmental Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation in Lublin initiated 18 investigations in the cases of:

  1. Murder, by the German military policy unit, of a Polish citizen of Jewish nationality named Berek and no fewer than 15 Polish citizens of Jewish nationality, in the forest area near Brzeωnica Bychawska, Lublin voivodship, in the period from September 1939 to July 1944;

  2. shooting down of not fewer than 2 000 people of Jewish nationality in 1941 in Kaωuszyn, Mazowieckie voivodship;

  3. murdering, by the German occupants in 1943 in Biszcza, the county of Biωgoraj, Lublin voivodship, approximately 20 people of Jewish nationality; murdering, on July 13th 1942 and in 1942 by the German soldiers in J󺥦󷠡nd in the area, the county of Biωgoraj, Lublin voivodship, approximately 1840 Polish citizens of Jewish nationality; murdering, by the German occupants in August, September and October 1942 in the area between Tarnogr󤠡nd Biωgoraj, around 80 Polish citizens of Jewish nationality; murdering, by the German occupants in 1942 in Frampol, the county of Biωgoraj, Lublin voivodship, not fewer than 600 Polish citizens of Jewish nationality;

  4. murder of a Jew - a man called Moszko, by a German soldier, on May 20th 1942 in Jan󷫡, the commune of Sitno, Lublin voivodship;

  5. murdering, in the period from November 1st 1941 to November 4th 1943 in the concentration camp for Jewish people in Poniatowa, the county of Opole Lubelskie, of 15 thousand Polish citizens of Jewish nationality and 13 thousand Russian prisoners;

  6. murdering, in the years 1940-1943 by the Nazi occupants in Zwierzyniec, Lublin voivodship, not fewer than several dozen Polish citizens of Jewish nationality;

  7. extermination by the German occupant of the Polish citizens of Jewish nationality in Kiwerce, former Woωy񳫩e voivodship;

  8. annihilation, in the years 1941-1943, of the Jewish inhabitants of Kraωnik Lubelski;

  9. murders of people of Jewish nationality in 1943 in Barch󷻼/font>

  10. murder, among others things, of an unidentified Jewish woman, on January 13th 1943 in Sadowne, the county of W꧲󷬠Mazowieckie voivodship, by the German military police;

  11. murder of a group of 17 Polish citizens of Jewish nationality, most probably on February 8th 1943, near Rog󺩥c, the county of Przesmyki, Mazowieckie voivodship, by Nazi officers;

  12. shooting down by Nazi officers, with the Ukrainian police acting in co-operation, of the inhabitants of Dubna, Woωy񳫩e voivodship, including citizens of Jewish nationality in the years 1941-1943;

  13. murder, in the years 1940 - 1943 in the villages Strzyωew and Zarzecz, the county of ωuk󷬠Lublin voivodship, and in the area of these villages, during the forced labor activities conducted upon the river of Krzna, of among others Polish citizens of Jewish nationality; murder by unidentified German soldiers in 1943 in "Kock ωukowski', Lublin voivodship, of around 42 people of Jewish nationality;

  14. disclosure, in June 1992 in Lublin, in Obro񣯷 Pokoju street, of human remnants (the case may concern Polish citizens of Jewish origin);

  15. murder of 30 people of Jewish nationality by the Germans in autumn 1942 in Kozienice G󲮥;

  16. shooting down of several dozen Polish citizens of Jewish nationality by Nazi in summer 1942 on the Zbarska Mountain, at the road in the area of Wiωniowica St.;

  17. extermination of Polish citizens of Jewish nationality by the German armed forces in Lipa Kozienice, Radom voivodship, on September 5th and 6th 1939;

  18. murders committed by the German military police in Sokoωowo Podlaskie and the area, among others on Polish citizens of Jewish nationality (in the townships: Bachorza, ωyωaki, Bωonie, Borki, Budy Kupiety񳫩e, Dyb󷬠Gaωki and many others).

F. Departmental Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation in ω󤟠initiated 5 investigations in the cases of:

  1. murders committed in the years 1939-1945, in the area of the ωowicz county, by the Gestapo officers, criminal police and German military police from ωowicz (concerns as well Polish citizens of Jewish nationality);

  2. mass murders of Polish citizens of Jewish nationality committed in the period from June 1941 to July 1944 by units of the Nazi police in the co-operation with troops from Belarus, Lithuania and Latvia, during the extermination of the Jewish ghettos in the townships and villages located in former Nowogr󤥫 voivodship, among others in Lida, Nowogr󤥫, Nieωwieω, Sωonim and Baranowicze;

  3. murders committed by officers of the German military police from Chorzenice in the years 1940-1944 in the communes of Brudzice and Kruszyna, the county of Radomsko, as well as Mykan󷠡nd Woncerz󷬠the county of Cz곴ochowa (concerns also Polish citizens of Jewish nationality);

  4. murders committed by the Nazi military police officers in the years 1940-1943 in Dobroszyce and in the area, the county of Radomsko, ω󤟠voivodship (concerns also Polish citizens of Jewish nationality);

  5. murders committed by officers of the Nazi security police from Radomsko, in the years 1942-1945, in the area of Radomsko and nearby townships, including among others the execution of around 30 Poles in May or June 1944 on so called "kopiec radomski" and the execution of 18 Poles in December 1944 in Folwarki (concerns also Polish citizens of Jewish nationality).

G. Departmental Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation in Pozna񠩮itiated 5 investigations in the cases of:

  1. murders and other Nazi crimes committed by the Gestapo in Fort VII in Pozna񠨣oncerns also Polish citizens of Jewish nationality);

  2. murdering approximately 30 Polish citizens of Jewish nationality, most probably in autumn 1943, in Zadre栮ear Rokitnica, former Polesie voivodship;

  3. murders of Polish citizens of Jewish nationality, committed by the German occupants in the years 1941-1942 in the county of Turek;

  4. murdering an unidentified number of Polish citizens of Jewish nationality from the ghetto in autumn 1942 in Kobry񠨦ormer Polesie voivodship) by the German armed forces;

  5. murders of Polish citizens of Jewish nationality, committed by Hitler soldiers in the years 1939-1942, in the former county of Kolsk.

H. Departmental Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation in Rzesz󷠩nitiated 6 investigations in the cases of:

  1. shooting down of a Pole named Tworek in 1943 or 1944 and a three-member Jewish family from a village Tursko Wielkie, the county of Stasz󷬠Podkarpackie voivodship;

  2. murders of Polish citizens of Jewish nationality, by German soldiers in the years 1941-1943, in Brzyska Wola, the county of Leωajsk, Podkarpackie voivodship;

  3. murder of the T꣺y񳫩s together with Jewish people who were hidden in their household;

  4. murdering 14 Polish citizens of Jewish nationality by German soldiers in July 1942 in Strzegocice, the commune of Pilzno, Podkarpackie voivodship;

  5. murdering a man of Jewish nationality, named Srul, by the Hitler soldiers in Czermina, the county of Mielec, Podkarpackie voivodship, at an unidentified time;

  6. murders committed by the German officers in a forced labor camp in the quarry in Besk, county of Sanok, Podkarpackie voivodship (among others Polish citizens of Jewish nationality).

In the Institute of National Remembrance - Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation 1081 investigations are currently being conducted, including 217 investigations concerning Nazi crimes.

48 out of the Nazi crimes concern deeds (single, collective and continuous) that were committed in the frames of the Holocaust crime.

4. Other proactive steps taken by the IPN.

Institute of National Remembrance actively reacts to all the cases in which new circumstances appear, which are presented also by means of the public media. In the recent period an example of such a case is that of dr. Hans Mω the last living doctor in the Federal Republic of Germany - from the SS Hygiene Institute in Auschwitz, and Institute of Anatomy of the medical Academy in Gda񳫠where soap from the human fat was produced, as well as the case of Georg Ripper, living in the Federal Republic of Germany, who committed Nazi crimes on Poles and Jews in Lida, whose case was recently dismissed by the German court. The Institute of National Remembrance is also active in the area of scientific publications.
