Investigation concerning the deportations of Polish people from the territories of the former Bydgoszcz and Toruń provinces to the Soviet Union in 1945
On March 30, 2001, the Branch Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation in Gdańsk reassumed the investigation concerning the deportations of Polish people from the territories of the former Bydgoszcz and Toruń provinces to the Soviet Union in 1945.
In the course of the investigation, it was established that the Polish people from the territories of the former Bydgoszcz and Toruń provinces were deported immediately after the occupation of a given township by the Soviet Army. Especially young people were the target for deportations. At first they were placed in camps, for example in Jabłonowo, Dzałdowo and Iława, from which they were later deported into the Soviet Union territory.
The deported people were then allocated in labour camps in Siberia. As a result of hunger, emaciation and extremely difficult life conditions many people did not survive the deportations. The ones who did and managed to come back from Siberia confirm that there was a large death toll. These statements were additionally supported by the former district courts' records.
