Dr. Łukasz Kamiński

Łukasz Kamiński (b. 1973) has graduated from the Institute of History at the University of Wrocław (1996) and since 1999 worked there as an assistant professor. Since 2000 he has been working in the Institute of National Remembrance, first as the Head of the Public Education Office Branch in Wrocław, then as the Head of the Department of Research, Documentation and Library Collections. Since 2006 he had worked as the Deputy Director of the Public Education Office. Dr. Kamiński initiated and managed the Summer School of Modern History. He co-edited the biannual magazine "Memory and Justice" and "The Encyclopedia of Solidarity". He also was a member of the Council of the IPN’s Bulletin, editorial board of the biographical dictionary "Conspiracy and Social Resistance in Poland, 1944-1956 ", editorial board of the quarterly magazine "Soudobe Dejiny" (Czech Republic), the Scientific Council of the "Caiatele CNSAS" journal (Romania), member of the Scientific Board of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes (Czech Republic). Dr. Kamiński is the author and co-author of more than 300 scientific and popular science publications. He received scholarship from the University of Wrocław Foundation, the Brzezie Lanckoroński Foundation and the Foundation for Polish Science. He is the winner of the J.J. Lipski Prize (1997) and R. Gąsowski Prize (2000).

Scientifically dr. Kamiński is interested in opposition and social resistance against the communist regime in 1944-1989. He is the author of such publications as "Workers' Strikes in Poland in 1945-1948" (1999), "The Poles towards New Reality 1944-1948. Forms of the Noninstitutional, Spontaneous Social Resistance" (2000), and "Roads to Freedom of the Copper Field" (2006).

Owing to dr. Kamiński’s initiative a fundamental selection of documents from the archives of Eastern Europe has been published, presenting the reaction of the Soviet bloc countries to the 1980-1981 crisis in Poland ("Before and after 13 December: Eastern Bloc Countries Attitude towards the Crisis in PRL 1980-1982”, Vol. 1 -2). Together with dr. Grzegorz Waligóra dr. Kamiński published collections of documents concerning the activities of the PRL communist security service with regards to opposition organizations and groups in the 70s and 80s ("Fighting Solidarity in Documents" (2007), "Cryptonym Vassals: The Secret Service and the Student Solidarity Committees 1977-1980" (2007), "Cryptonym Pegasus. The Secret Service and the Association of Academic Courses 1978-1980" (2008).

He is the initiator of the international scientific cooperation regarding modern history of East Central Europe, creator of seminars and conferences devoted to the problems of socio-political crises in the Soviet bloc and editor of publications presenting the scientific achievements of these conferences.

Dr. Kamiński is also the originator and co-organizer of several important international conferences on the communist regime and the communist repression apparatus, which were co-organized by the Institute of National Remembrance. They brought together world’s most renowned scholars ("The Communist Security Apparatus in East Central Europe 1944/45-1989" (2005), "Crisis of the Communist System 1953-1989" (2006), "International Communist Movement, 1944-1956 (2007)). He is the co-editor of the pioneering collective monograph on the communist repression apparatus in the Soviet bloc countries, published in English ("A Handbook of the Communist Security Apparatus in East Central Europe 1944-1989") and German ("Handbuch der kommunistischen Geheimdienste in Osteuropa 1944 – 1991”).

On 10 June 2011 the Polish Sejm appointed Łukasz Kamiński the President of the Institute of National Remembrance.
