Diary. Lviv October 12th, 1939 - September 13th, 1940

An occupation diary by MariaGaklik is a report made on a day-to-day basis. It is an account of events asseen by a person totally disengaged and who is absorbed mostly in her ownworries although who lives with a hope for liberation. The Diary is a personalaccount of an occupation reality in Lviv. It is a rich source depicting amulti-faceted reality of Lviv in the period from October 12th, 1939 to September13th, 1940.

The author does not show the city and its inhabitants through the prism of the great politics', only through succinct information concerning every day of hers, her friends' and the co-inhabitants' of the house at Domsa street. Although amajority of the depicted heroes remain anonymous, the attractiveness of thediary remains invaluable in terms of facts and knowledge that it introduces. Thefates and experiences of this small group of people seem to excellently depictthe experiences of the Lviv inhabitants at the macro scale.

The author, Maria Gaklik, was born on August 25th, 1912 and died on March 24th,1988. She graduated from the Jan Kazimierz University in Lviv before the war. Asit can be understood from her personal notes, she was a journalist. During theSoviet occupation at first she lived in Lviv. In September 1940, once shecompleted her pedagogical training and received a teacher's post, she left Lvivfor Radziechów.
