International Conference "The Communist Security Apparatus in East Central Europe, 1944-45 to 1989"

On June 16, 2005 the International Conference "The Communist Security Apparatus in East Central Europe, 1944-45 to 1989" was opened. Held in Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw, it was attended by 113 historians and experts of political sciences from 18 countries as well as 223 participants from Poland.

The conference is co-organized by Institute of National Remembrance, Institute of Political Studies-Polish Academy of Sciences, City of Warsaw, Federal Commissioner for the Records of the State Security Service of the former German Democratic Republic (Germany), Foundation for the Research on the SED Dictatorship (Germany), Center for Research on Contemporary History (Germany), Institute of Contemporary History, Academy of Sciences of Czech Republic, Office of the Documentation and the Investigation of the Crimes of Communism (Czech Republic), and Nation's Memory Institute (Slovakia).

On the part of the hosts i.e. the Institute of National Remembrance and the City of Warsaw the President of the Institute Prof. Leon Kieres and the Vice President of the City of Warsaw Mr. Władysław Stasiak delivered opening speeches. On the part of the co-organizers the opening ceremony was attended by Ms. Marianne Birthler Federal Commissioner for the Records of the State Security Service of the former German Democratic Republic (Germany), Mr. Marian Gula, Vice President of the Nation’s Memory Institute, and Mr. Oldřich Tůma. Institute of Contemporary History, Academy of Sciences of Czech Republic.

The 3-day conference includes, among others, presentation of 35 papers, exhibitions, panel discussions as well as show of documentaries and films.
