Investigation concerning the deportations of Polish people from the territories of the former Bydgoszcz and Toruń voivodships to the Soviet Union in 1945
On March 30th, 2001, the Branch Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation in Gdańsk reassumed the investigation concerning the deportations of Polish people from the territories of the former Bydgoszcz and Toruń voivodships to the Soviet Union in 1945.
In the course of the investigation, it was stated that the Polish people from the territories of the former Bydgoszcz and Toruń voivodships were deported immediately after the occupation of a given township by the Soviet Army. Especially young people were a target for deportations. At first they were placed in camps, for example in Jabłonowo, Dzałdowo and Iława, from which they were later deported into the Soviet Union territory.
The deported people were then allocated in labour camps in Siberia. As a result of hunger, emaciation, very difficult life conditions, including the atmospheric and sanitary conditions, many people did not survive the deportations. The ones who survived and came back from Siberia confirm that there was a large death toll. These statements were additionally supported by the former district courts' records stating deaths of these
people.
