Beginning of the Search in the Jedwabne Site

Beginning of the Search in the Jedwabne Site Based on the decision of the Polish Minister of Justice - the General Prosecutor of July 10th, 1941, the search works started within the limits of the Jewish graveyard. The search, which will be continued until the remains of the victims have been collected, concentrates on the removal of a layer of the soil and then sifted out. At present, single items, which might have belonged to the victims, have been discovered. The works are conducted simultaneously by a few groups of archaeologists. Michael Schudrich, the Rabbi of Warsaw and Łódź, and Rabbi Menachem Eckstein, a distinguished specialist on exhumation performed according to the cannons of Judaism, are present at the site.
Media representatives have not been given access to the area.
At the present stage of works, it is not possible to assess the final date of works due to technical reasons. A meeting has also been held with Poland-Israel Friendship Association active in Israel. Warsaw, May 31st, 2001
